Hosting a Workshop
January 2015
What
How and why to host
a Software Carpentry workshop
Who We Are
A volunteer non-profit organization
that teaches basic lab skills for scientific computing
to scientists, engineers, and others.
What and How We Teach
-
Two-day intensive hands-on workshop
-
Scientists teaching scientists
the Unix shell |
⇒ |
automate repetitive tasks |
Git / GitHub |
⇒ |
track and share work |
Python / R / MATLAB |
⇒ |
build modular code |
SQL |
⇒ |
manage data |
Why It's Needed
-
Scientists don't know what questions to ask
-
Or how to recognize a useful answer when they find one
-
Most online tutorials are aimed at commercial developers, not researchers
-
And many focus on HPC but ignore pre-requisite skills
Benefits
-
10-20% improvement in productivity is common
-
10X isn't rare
-
Do the old things faster
-
Tackle new problems
-
Ready for HPC, the cloud, big data, ...
-
Start doing open science
Format
-
40 learners + 2 instructors per room
-
Plus as many (local) helpers as possible
-
Two (or more) rooms in parallel lets us stream people by prior experience
-
Dinner-style seating, good WiFi, lots of power plugs, unlocked washrooms, ...
Costs
-
Host site covers travel and accommodation
-
$1250 admin fee for first workshop in a year + $750 for each subsequent workshop in that year
-
Money used to offset central costs (instructor training, curriculum development, etc.)
Waivers
"Software Carpentry strives to be a global project and support a diverse set of organizations.
Any potential host that wishes to offer a workshop that would aid these goals
is urged to contact the SCF to discuss waivers and other arrangements."
