Software Carpentry + Data Carpentry Instructor & Helper Retreat

We're inviting Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructors and helpers to get together at sites around the world for a day of sharing skills, trying out new lessons and ideas and discussing all things instructor and helper related. Broadcast Sessions

Throughout the day, we're inviting sites and individuals to lead lessons, discussions and other sessions, broadcast live on Google Hangouts on Air. The sessions so far are listed below.

Connecting

In order to connect with instructors and helpers worldwide, there'll be (at least) two channels for communication that everyone is encouraged to participate in:

Google Hangouts on Air will broadcast the live sessions above at this URL.
Chat online with everyone via our Slack channel. If you haven't Slacked with us before, you can get an invite to the channel here.

Hosting a Site

If you'd like to host a site, the requirements are simple:

Email the Mentoring Committee and let us know right away, so we can get you set up.
Find some space for people to meet that's accessible, and can accommodate lots of people with laptops.
Reach out to your community to let them know what's happening.
Arrange for a video connection to the global Google Hangout on Air, so your site can lead a session on the broadcast sessions list above.
Brainstorm with your community on what kind of broadcast session you'd all like to lead; we'd like every site to try to lead a one-hour session, if possible.
Create a schedule for local practice teaching sessions - encourage everyone to try something new!

Participating Remotely

If you're unable to join one of the local sites, that's OK! In addition to watching the broadcast sessions, there are two other ways for you to participate from anywhere on the web:

Remote participants are welcome to convene a session themselves; please email the Mentoring Committee with your idea, and we'll get you on the list.
Many sites will be making time for participants to practice new lessons and get feedback from their peers; if you'd like a chance to teach, contact a site in your timezone by following the link in the pin on the map above, or contact the Mentoring Committee and we'll help put you in touch.
